HA Failover Alarms

$

We had an issue in our 5.0 vCenter where HA did not appear to be functioning correctly. When I viewed the HA Cluster Status, it showed 4 hosts in initialization status and 1 connected to the master. All VM's were showing as protected. As part of troubleshooting, I reconfigured HA on the master. Once completed, the Cluster status showed the 5 hosts now connected to the master. The only problem was a large majority of the VM's now had HA alarms.

The logs indicate that HA unsuccessfully failed over the VM, stating that the operation is not allowed in the current state. I want to know why this would happen after simply reconfiguring HA on the master? Additionally, there is no issue on the host in question. Why would HA be trying to failover? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from occurring in the future?

Design cluster with active\active Behaviour

Hi guys,

So, I need to think about something like a Metrocluster, active\active, without using EMC VPlex (or similar).

Is it possible to create something like "vSphere HA multisite (geographically dispersed cluster)"?

Using EMC VNX, EMC Recover Point and/or EMC MirrorView in the middle?

I need some lights here to guide me (if it's possible of course). For a "active/passive solution" I already use SRM.

All of this using vSphere 5.1 or 5.5

HA VM monitoring, how to test?

Hello,

We have 2 ESXi 5.1 in a cluster with HA enabled.

We have a software suite distributed in several VM's and we'd like to test how the whole behaviour is affected when some of the VM (node) crashes.

The HA is working properly: When I shut down or reboot one of the ESXi, the VM are Migrated to the other ESX.

But we'd like not to have to shut down the entire ESX to test a node (a node of our software suite) crashing. Most of the nodes are linux systems (CentOS). We have tried:

1)Powering off the VM from the vSphere client and from the VM itself --> But it's not restarted (which I suppose is correct, as it is not a crash, is a voluntary shutdown).

2)With a fork bomb, but nothing happens: The VM gets frozen, but it isn't restarted.

Any suggestion will be wellcomed.

VMWare HA Question

I am setting up a new HA environment for 2 ESXi hosts across 2 datacenters.  This is my first time using VMWare HA and I am looking for advice, and have some questions for the community.

Firstly, If I have a VM on my "master" server in Datacenter A, and it is replicated to the "slave" host in Datacenter B, does the VM's network have to be the same subnet.  If I was using DHCP, I could see how I could have it in two different subnets.  However I am using static IPs for the VMs and they are on different subnets.  Is this possible?

When a Master FDM does not recieve slave hearbeat, how long does a Master FDM wait before it check whether FDM has datastore heartbeat?

Is it 15 sec

Unable to connect to MKS: Failed to connect to server :902

Hi All,

I hope someone will be able to assist or perhaps point me to the right direction. We have 2 hosts in a cluster that were previously configured at the vCenter as a cluster using their IP addresses - no problem opening the console of the guests VMs. For some we had to remove them in the cluster and re-add via their hosts name. 1 vm is having this issue, the other is fine opening the guest console

I followed the steps on this post: VMware KB: Cannot open the virtual machine console but no luck. Tried to replicate as much settings as I can from the working hosts - still no go.

Please help!

Admission Control Issues & Confusion

$

I am trying to test HA& DRS in my lab which consists of 2 physical host & 2 VM's

Each VM is 1 vcpu and 2GB Configured Memory, no Reservations are in place.

Each vm sits on a different host.

When ever i test by placing a host into Maintenance Mode, i get the following error.

Insufficent Resources To Satisfy Configured Failover Level For vSphere HA.

Cluster has 21 GHZ CPU & 31GB Memory.

No VM Reservations

Admission Control is set to Percentage of Cluster Resources.

I have used various combinations ranging from 10% to 50% but it makes no difference.

Current Setup

Current CPU Failover Capacity     97%

Current Memory Failover Capacity 97%

Configured CPU Failover Capacity 25%

Configured Memory Failover Capacity 25%

So im at a loss as to why i cant perform this simple task, when my cluster clearly has sufficent resources.

Could it be HA is stopping manual maintenance mode operations, as it does its best to keep multiple host available and as i only have 2 hosts this maybe the reason?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you all

JK

Is vCenter 5.1 (with SSO) and SQL 2008 R2 database mirror a supported HA configuration?

Is vCenter 5.1 with SSO and SQL 2008 R2 database mirror a supported HA configuration?

I've read some blog post SSO won't work with a mirrored configuration. What happens if we have a fail-over? I'm guessing vCenter will work and SSO will fail?

Please post your experience with this.

Need to know customer impact on network partition scenario

$

Hi ,

when network partition happens between 2 hosts in 4 host cluster, and if a  host goes down in 1 partition , it is that VM 's should failover to other host in the same partition right??[expected behavior]

what if the VM's failover to host in the foreign partition?? a failover to entirely different partition??

In such case how will customer get impacted??

Thanks,

Smilepillay

Can I build a HA cluster with no heartbeat from the VM's?

Hi,

I have some virtual firewalls on two ESX hosts.

The firewalls run Unix and it is not (at the moment) possible for me to install vmware tools.

Is it possible to create a HA cluster where VMs are booted up on the other host in case of a host fail?

Best regards

Martin

Insufficient vSphere HA failover resources

Hello everyone,

First let me apologize for the length of this post. I am new to the forums and have caught the VMWare "BUG"! I am preparing for my VCP test in December. I am going through the blueprint and working on HA and running into a weird issue. When attempting to put one host into maintenance mode I get the following alarm:

Insufficient vSphere HA failover resources

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2858/11039987715_f277d1f2d6.jpg

As we all are aware this should start the vMotion process but in my case it does not. Upon further investigation of the tasks I see Unable to automatically migrate (VM) from ESXIHost1.

HomeLab Information:

ESXI Host 1:

CPU: Xeon E3-1230v2

Memory: 32GB

ESXI Host 2:

CPU: Xeon E3-1230v2

Memory: 32GB

Storage:

Synology 1813+ (NFS & iSCSI)

Qnap 219p (iSCSI)

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3754/11039991793_f88cc0147a.jpg

I attempted the following Admission Control Policy:

Host Failures the cluster tolerates: 1

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5523/11039987935_cf091e08fb.jpg

Define failover capacity by reserving a percentage of the cluster resources:

CPU: 50%

Memory: 70%

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7297/11040082976_cd36717d26.jpg

With both policies I get the same error.

I have enough resources as I currently shutdown all VMs except for two, one on each host.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5506/11040082726_3c7d534d8b.jpg

Also there is no CPU or Memory reservations on the VMs.

Any advise/suggestions would be appreciated as I am a bit confused as to why this shouldn’t be working.

Multiple failover hosts in a vSphere 5.1 stretched cluster

$

Hi,

I have a question how the below note should be interpreted, we are running a stretched vpshere 5.1 cluster with affinity rules keeping the VMs on hosts where their data resides.

We would like to have 2 failover hosts in the cluster, preferably one per site if a host on that site is lost but I´m aware that this might not be possible.

But does the below note mean that affinity rules can´t be used at all in the cluster if I enable (multiple) failover hosts?

Note

If you use the Specify Failover Hosts admission control policy and designate multiple failover hosts, DRS does not load balance failover hosts and VM-VM affinity rules are not supported.

Thanks...

HA with only 2 hosts and 1 shared storage

$

Hi Guys,

We have an environment with only 2 ESXi hosts with a shared storage where one of the VM being hosted is a MS-SQL-08R2.

I understand that the vCenter Server can be installed as a VM and in any case it requires a SQL database (which is planned to be run in an existing VM "MS-SQL-08R2").

If I install vCenter Server as a VM and including the MS-SQL-08R2 VM both being hosted on that only 2 ESXi host and in any case randomly, one of the 2 host (that hosts the vCenter Server VM and/or MS-SQL-08R2" VM) fails. Will HA not able to function and reboot all VMs on another good host?

Cheers,

Grant
