I have to analyze significant number of production clusters on vmware 5,5.
They differ in cluster configuration/settings and purpose and most of them are overprovisioned in terms of some resources.
I mean they just look like clusters but in reality I think because of current cluster settings or VMs resource requirements HA, DRS and SDRS functionalities wouldn't work on most of those clusters they just not balanced properly as far as i see for now.
I need to deliver analysis which will prove that specific cluster current configuration will or won't help in case of failure of ESXi cluster members and Vms will be/or won't be dispersed among the other ESXi.
I need to prepare report what should be changed on each of those clusters to make the environment truly high available and redundant etc.
For now i'm analyzing clusters one by one which is quite time consuming, I cannot simulate esx failures as it's all production.
Tools like rvtools are helpful for collecting general information but won't help me much in this case. Recommendations in VCenter are good thing but it will not do that job as well.
Are there any tools, powercli scripts etc which could be helpful in that task for a number of clusters to explicitly show misconfiguration or overprovisioning details which will stop clusters from doing what they design for?
Best if i could simulate specific failures or have info that for example in case ESX-1 fails ..that and that will work or sth won't be smoothly managed by HA/DRS/SDRS etc.
